If you’re planning to get pregnant, eating a healthy, balanced diet will help you stay well throughout pregnancy and be good for your baby’s health.
Nutrition is about eating food that gives your body what it needs to stay healthy and work properly. The main nutrients your body needs are proteins, carbohydrates, healthy fats, vitamins and minerals.
Nutrition and Fertility
What you eat can affect your chances of getting pregnant, but the full picture is not very clear-cut because it is hard to separate diet from other factors.  What we do know is that the best foods for getting pregnant are the same as those for general well-being: whole grains, healthy fats and proteins.
The best advice is to:
  • choose wholegrain high fibre foods (such as bread, with seeds, brown rice and pasta)  instead of white processed foods (white bread, rice and pasta
  • eat more fruit and vegetables, including lentils and beans
  • avoid saturated ‘bad’ fats, such as fried foods, pastry, biscuits, pies and cakes.  
  • eat more unsaturated ‘good’ fats, such as avocados, nuts, oily fish and seeds
  • avoid sugary food and drink, such as sweets, biscuits, cakes and fizzy drinks.
My advise
1....  If you have no periods or your periods come only occasionally you may not be ovulating (releasing an egg from your ovary). This is a cause of infertility.   Having a portion of full-fat dairy every day (such as milk or yoghurt) has been shown to help with this. It may linked to the higher oestrogen levels in full fat dairy foods compared to low-fat.
2....  Most women use contraception as a safe way to avoid getting pregnant when they are not ready for children. When you stop contraception, it is often because you would like to try for a baby. You can read more about stopping contraception here.
3.....  If you have been taking contraception that uses hormones (such as the Pill, the patch, injections) for a long time, you may not know your cycle very well (for example how long it is). This is because the bleed that happens when you move to a new packet of the Pill is not a true period. A true period happens when you ovulate (release an egg from your ovaries) and the Pill prevents ovulation
4...    For the best chance of getting pregnant, you need to get your eggs and your partner's sperm together as often as possible.  Your eggs and sperm will be healthy if you follow healthy food so that you can have healthy child..
5....   Your cycle starts on the first day of your period and continues up to the first day of your next period.    This is what happens during the cycle and the start of a pregnancy.
  • Eggs mature in your ovaries once a month.
  • The lining of your womb starts to get thicker to prepare for fertilised eggs.
  • Once the egg is mature it is released from one of the ovaries – this is called ovulation.
  • During ovulation your cervical mucus (this is the substance in your cervix, between the vagina and the womb) becomes thinner and clearer to help any sperm to swim to the egg.
  • If you have sex, millions of sperm will swim up the cervix into the uterus and the fallopian tubes to meet a mature egg.
  • If sperm is present at the point of ovulation, or during the next 24 hours, the egg may be fertilised (only one sperm has to join with the egg for this to happen).
  • If the egg is fertilized, it starts to move towards the womb and divide into more cells.
  • Once it reaches the womb the fertilized egg has to attach the lining of the womb, this is called implantation and is the start of pregnancy. Many fertilized eggs don’t implant and are passed out of the body.
  • If the egg has not been fertilized, the egg is re-absorbed by the body, the hormone levels drop, and the womb lining is shed – the beginning of your next period.

6.... To boost your chances of conceiving, aim to have regular sex (every 2 to 3 days) throughout your cycle so you know that there should hopefully be good-quality sperm waiting when the egg is released. An active sex life is all most people need to conceive.

7..     You can also find out about your menstrual cycle by keeping a note of your temperature each morning when you wake up. Your temperature rises by about 0.2°C when ovulation has taken place.

8....  Exercising/being active before you get pregnant and during pregnancy benefits your pregnancy and baby.
