Take Folic Acid before you conceive
Posted on 20th November 2015

Taking folic acid when planning a pregnancy will help your baby’s healthy growth and development.
Folic acid is a vitamin (B9). It is found in certain foods and it can also be taken as tablets...   I advise you to take take healthy food which will be beneficial to your child's growth without any side effects.
If you’re planning to have a baby, it’s important that you take folic acid tablets for two to three months before you conceive. This allows it to build up in your body to a level that gives the most protection to your future baby against neural tube defects, such as spina bifida.
As you could get pregnant within a month of trying, it is ideal to start taking folic acid tablets two months before you stop contraception. If you have already stopped contraception, that’s OK, start taking it now and until week 12 of pregnancy.
Some women get pregnant very quickly, in fact 1 in 3 women who are having regular sex (every 2 to 3 days) or timing sex around ovulation, will conceive within a month.
If they are having regular unprotected sex:
  • more than 8 out of 10 couples where the woman is aged under 40 will be pregnant by 1 year
  • more than 9 out of 10 couples will get pregnant by 2 years.
My advise
1....  Your age is not something you can control. Many women are having babies later in life for very valid reasons such as not feeling stable enough to support a child (for example, with money or housing), not wanting to have a child before or not having a partner to have a child with.
2...   One study found that for couples having regular unprotected sex:
  • around 7 out of 10 women aged 30 will conceive within one year
  • around 6 out of 10 women aged 35 will conceive within one year
  • around 4 out of 10 women aged 40 will conceive within one year.
3...   Fertility is affected by lifestyle. There are some things you can do to improve your fertility. For example, if you smoke it will take you longer to get pregnant than a non-smoker. If you give up smoking now, your chances of conceiving faster will increase.
4....   Some types of contraception may delay fertility for a while after you stop taking it. For example the progestogen-only injection for contraception may delay normal fertility for up to one year after the last injection. Find out more about stopping contraception.
5....   If you have the right level of folic acid in your body before you get pregnant, it reduces the risk of the baby developing neural tube defects by up to 70%. Neural tube defects are problems with the brain or spinal cord, including spina bifida.
6....   Spina bifida is not common but it can cause a wide range of problems for the baby, including:    a...problems with movement     b....bladder and bowel problems      c...learning difficulties.
7....  If you have a higher risk of having a pregnancy affected by neural tube defects you will be advised to take a higher dose of 5mg folic acid.
8....    You may have a higher risk if   a...you have diabetes    b...you or your partner have a neural tube defect     c...you have had a previous pregnancy affected by a neural tube defect  d....you or your partner have a family history of neural tube defects   e..you have epilepsy   f...you are a heavy drinker.
9...    Folic acid is available in your healthy food which will be beneficial to you and your  child for healthy growth.
