4..  Calcium, why is it Important?
Calcium is considered to be one of the most important minerals in human body. It is found in some foods and added to others due to its important role in our body. Calcium is required for maintaining bone mass, is essential for exocytosis of neurotransmitters, takes part in the contraction of muscle cells, replaces sodium as the depolarizing mineral in the heart, and participates in many other physiologic functions. Studies have shown that a lack of adequate dietary calcium can induce many bone-related diseases such as osteoporosis, especially in postmenopausal women, as well as other calcium-related deficiencies, such as hypocalcaemia and poor blood clotting.

However, less than 1% of total body calcium is required to support these essential metabolic functions. The serum calcium level is under tight control and does not fluctuate according to changes in our dietary intake: Our body uses bone tissue as a reservoir and a source of calcium in order to maintain constant concentrations of calcium in the blood, muscles, and intercellular fluids.

The remaining 99% percent of the body's calcium is stored in the bones and teeth, where it is used for the supporting structure and functionality. Bone formation exceeds resorption in periods of growth in children and adolescents, whereas in older adults, bone breakdown exceeds formation, resulting in bone loss that increases the risk of osteoporosis.

Most people understand the direct relationship between calcium deficiency and osteoporosis, but it is important to remember that calcium has a significant role in additional and critical processes in our body. Therefore, calcium deficiency may result in serious diseases other than osteoporosis. Moderatecalcium deficiency can lead to crampsjoint pain, palpitations, high cholesterol, insomnia, poorgrowth, numbness and additional complications.
